DESCRIPTION

Antique early-20th Century Imperial Russian solid silver samorodok cigarette case, set with enamelled, gem set and gold plaques, the case is of very heavy gauge and very well made, well concealed hinge and rectangular form with rounded corners, push button mounted with a large cabochon sapphire, inside is richly parcel gilt.

Exterior applied with two flags, surmounting initials and two dates 1903 and 1907. It was common practice at the time to offer cases of this type applied with gold plaques to valued friends or superiors. What makes this case unique is the flags and the quality of the case show that it was probably presented to a commander or a valued dear friend of Russo-Finnish origin, Finnish flag with a quarter superior to the colors of Russia and a flag of Korea recalling the Korean campaign of 1905 Russo-Japanese War. This regiment probably served together from 1903 to 1907 and were active in the campaign of Manchuria 1904. The reverse side bears the initials of the person to whom the case was presented to A.T, its further dated 1910 with the name Blanchette (possibly the persons nickname, Blanc meaning White in French, the name often given to people of fair skin and blond hair) and the mink (probably the ships mascot)

Both sides Hallmarked Russian silver 84 (875 standard), St-Petersburg, year 1908-1926, Maker's mark NA (Arharov Ivan Andreev, active 1895-1917)
