DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th /20th Century extremely rare and interesting Siamese (modern Thai) Solid Silver tea set on a tray, comprising of teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug on a tray, each piece is highly-decorative, chased and embossed with Buddhist deities surrounded by stylized foliage and flames, each figural handle modelled like a Naga, the serpent king, the shaped oval tray also featuring a decorative chased border.
The set has been acid tested and shows a 900+ standard. The tray is mounted with four rare Siamese commemorative bullet coins (pod duang) with the mark of King Mongkut (Rama IV), ruling from 1851 until 1868. Commemorative bullet coins are very rare and collectable, given on special occasions such as dedication of temples, royal cremations, inauguration of a new reign, and is most unusual to find them mounted on a tea set's tray - the set was probably an important presentation piece. The set could be contemporary to the coin (1860's), or later, dating to the early 20th Century, set with commemorative coins for a special occasion.
