19th Century Indian Colonial Silver repousse three-piece tea set, comprising of teapot, lidded sugar bowl and cream jug, each spherical body is profusely and beautifully repousse' decorated with scrolling foliage and flowers on a tooled ground, interspersed with animals such lions and tigers hunting and fighting, unusual and particularly interesting the tiger attacking a man and the elephant fighting with a tiger.
Marked "MR" and "BHUJ", which is the Maker's mark for Mawji Raghavji, an important silversmith contemporary of the more prolific Oomersi Mawji.

DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century Indian Colonial Solid Silver repousse three-piece tea set, comprising of teapot, lidded sugar bowl and cream jug, each spherical body is profusely and beautifully repousse' decorated with scrolling foliage and flowers on a tooled ground, interspersed with animals such lions and tigers hunting and fighting, unusual and particularly interesting the tiger attacking a man and the elephant fighting with a tiger.
The teapot's spout ends with a zoomorphic porer, both lids are surmounted by cast elephants.
Each piece is stamped "MR" and "BHUJ", which is the Maker's mark for Mawji Raghavji, an important silversmith contemporary of the more prolific Oomersi Mawji (Wilkinson 1999, p.90). The quality shown in this set reveals a rivaling ability, please follow this link to an almost identical teaset by Oomersi Mawji held in the Victorian & Albert Museum.
