19th Century German silver impressively large lidded tankard, in the style of the early 16th Century example, beautifully chased and embossed with a very detailed and crowded battle scene, the removable base decorated with scrolling foliage in relief, large figural handle terminating with a scrolling leaf junction, hinged domed cover in the same style applied with a scrolling feather shaped thumb-piece and lid mounted with a large figure of a soldier on horseback with a spear.
Hallmarked with German Hanau pseudo-marks (800+ standard), the work is attributed to Maker J.D.Schleissner & Sohne.

Antique 19th Century Exceptional German solid silver impressively large lidded tankard, in the style of the early 16th Century example, beautifully chased and embossed with a very detailed and crowded battle scene, the removable base decorated with scrolling foliage in relief, large figural handle terminating with a scrolling leaf junction, hinged domed cover in the same style applied with a scrolling feather shaped thumb-piece and lid mounted with a large figure of a soldier on horseback with a spear.
The base is hallmarked with German Hanau pseudo-marks (800+ standard), the work is attributed to Maker J.D.Schleissner & Sohne, founded by Johann Daniel Schleissner (1793-1862), Johann's son, Daniel Philipp August Schleissner (1825-1891), was a great admirer of the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo period. Daniel had studied many private collections as well as public collections and had acquired much knowledge of the design aesthetics of these periods, hence producing very well made pieces and establishing himself as Hanau's pre-eminent producer of antique style pieces. This tankard dates to year 1870's.
