DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century German Solid Silver wall charger / sideboard dish, massive size (76 cm wide), of oval form in the style of the 16th / 17th Century silver sideboard dishes / chargers, the border embossed with scrolling foliage in the style of the early pieces with armorials on each end, the centre is finely chased with a magnificent battle scene, a knight getting arrested and a castle on fire on the background.
The scene represent a Medieval city seige, one side showing the Coat of Arms of the Count of Wurttemberg, the ruler standing on the left resembles Eberhard II called "the Jarrer" (1315-1392, Stuttgart), please compare it with the statue at the Stiftskirche, Stuttgart. The chasing is very fine, the dish bearing pseudo-marks typical of German Hanau silver, acid tested shows a 800+ silver standard, it dates to 1880's.
