DESCRIPTION
Antique early-20th Century rare and magnificent Burmese, Myanmar solid silver parcel gilt 3-piece tea set on tray, comprising of teapot, sugar bowl, cream jug, each piece is highly-decorative, chased and repoussed with various scenes from Burmese mythology on finely tooled ground. Each piece is applied with a cast figural handles and teapot spout terminates with a mythical naga head, teapot cover is surmounted by a dancing mythological figure.
The hand-crafted repousse' tray, is of large size and heavy gauge, parcel gilt, the border repousse' decorated in relief with scenes from the Burmese mythology amongst scrolling foliage, the centre is engraved with a Chinthe, a lion-like creature typical of Burmese folklore. The silver was partially gilt, but most of the gilding has been rubbed off by time and wear.
As often the case for Burmese silver the tea set is unmarked, but has been acid tested to show 900 grade silver. The base of the tray is Hallmarked "Sterling Silver Hand Crafted in Burma", and bears a memorial engraving "R. L. Wylie".
