DESCRIPTION
Antique early 20th Century English solid silver casket. it is a blank canvas in that he interior is completely unlined but for some faint traces of the original gilding to help protect the original contents. it would comfortably hold a great selection of cigars but also could equally find use as a box for sweets, biscuits, or desk accessories - the list is endless! The shape of this box is particularly pleasing with the incurved and serpentine sides, as well as the wonderful applied lion mask ring handles at each end.
It is fully hallmarked for the silvermsith George Howson, part of a dynasty of Sheffield silversmiths dating back to 1847, and interestingly is hallamarked for 1915, during WWI when far less silver was produced due to the war effort. it is a very unusual and rare casket that would blend perfectly with the contemporary interior and has retained the same condiiton since it was crafted. Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), Sheffield, year 1915 (r), Maker's mark GH (George Howson).
