DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century Victorian solid silver & enamel quite wonderful cigar box, made by one of the leading silversmiths of the day. The eminent firm of Sampson Mordan & Co Ltd was founded 200 years ago in 1823 and made famous for their invention of the mechanical pencil. Their evolution did not stop there and they were responsible for designing and manufacturing some of the most desirable pieces of novelty silver from the Victorian era. The box itself is similar in consruction to the other double opening box we have in stock, except this example is made from solid silver rather than coromandel wood.
The opposing hinged silver covers are enamelled with the words 'cigars' and 'cigarettes' in blue enamel italics and open to reveal twin compartments. Both, like the base, are lined with wood to help protect their precious contents. it is worth noting that modern cigars might struggle to fit in the relevant compartment unless custom made bjut would have no problem holding cigarillos. I have to say we have never seen this model before and are excited to be offering it for sale. Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1892 (R), Maker Sampson Mordan & Co.
