This installment marked the fifth James Bond film by Eon Productions, directed by Lewis Gilbert, the first of his three Bond films. The screenplay, loosely inspired by Ian Fleming's 1964 novel, was penned by Roald Dahl. During production, Sean Connery's retirement from the role of Bond was announced, although he later returned in "Diamonds are Forever" (1971) and "Never Say Never Again" (1983). The promotional efforts for the film's release were extensive, featuring three distinct posters showcasing Connery: one in a bathtub surrounded by women, another with the iconic Little Nelly aircraft, and the third depicting Connery inside a volcano.
