DESCRIPTION
Impressive mid-20th Century Thai extremely rare and fine solid silver niello presentation box, of traditional form, decorated throughout with stylized leaves on richly gilded ground. The base is hallmarked Sterling (925 standard), Makers mark Alex & Co (Royal silversmiths active in Bangkok). Provenance; Presented by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand (1927-2016) to Sir Berkley Gage, H.M Ambassador to Thailand in 1957 (1920-1999), sold by his inheritors.
Nielloware art and jewellery has always been very popular in Thailand, However, the niello technique does not seem to have originated in Thailand. It is said that it was introduced by the Persians or the Portuguese to Thailand since both countries had an early presence in Siam. This particular box is an exceptional example of Thai niello work, such pieces were only made for the Royal house. The tradition of presenting nielloware objects as State gifts goes back to the reign of King Narai of Ayutthaya (1656-1688).
