DESCRIPTION
Antique early-20th Century Thai very impressive solid silver hand-crafted shaped tazza, the shaped border and middle repousse' decorated in high relief with battle scenes from the Thai mythology amongst foliage. The stem modled as a Mythical creature, similar figures can be seen at the Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) since 1782. The present monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), currently resides at Chitralada Palace, but the Grand Palace is still used for official events. Several royal ceremonies and state functions are held within the walls of the palace every year.
The base decorated with emblems of Thailand, known as the Phra Khrut Pha "Garuda as the vehicle", holding a Naga snake. The Garuda was officially adopted as the national emblem by Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in 1911. However, the mythical creature had been used as a symbol of royalty in Thailand for centuries. The Garuda is depicted on seals, which are used by the King and the Government of Thailand to authenticate official documents and as its primary emblem.
The Garuda is a mythological beast of the Hindu and Buddhist tradition. According to Hindu mythology, the Garuda is the vahana (vehicle) of the god Vishnu (Narayana). The ancient kings of Thailand believed in divine kingship, and considered themselves the incarnation of the god Narayana. Thus, the Garuda came to symbolise the divine power and authority of the king.
The piece is exceptionally large, very decorative and heavy gauge. Not hallmarked, but has been acid tested and shows 900+ grade silver, dates to the first half of the 20th Century.
