20thC ITALIAN SET OF SIX DINING CHAIRS BY GIOTTO STOPPINO FOR KARTELL c.1970

DESCRIPTION

A striking set of six dining chairs designed by Giotto Stoppino for Kartell, made in Italy in the 1970s. The chairs have tubular chrome-plated metal frame, finished with a cream leather upholstery. Despite being over half a century old, they look as relevant and modern today as they did in the 1970s when they were produced. It is hard to overstate the innovative approach Giotto Stoppino had to design, they are easily adaptable to any mid century or modern interior. A wonderful seating solution for any lover of great mid century design.

Giotto Stoppino (also known as Joe Stoppino) had a prolific career. He created several beautiful pieces such as the “Maia” chair (1969), the “Bino” lamp (1969) and the “Alessia” chair (1970). Giotto Stoppino was born in Milan in 1926. He studied in Venice then in Milan, where he graduated in 1951. From 1953 to 1968, he worked for the cabinet “Architetti Associati” founded by Vittorio Gregotti and Lodovico Meneghetti. At the same time, he joined the ADI, an association dedicated to industrial drawings (he was also the president from 1982 to 1984). At the end of the 1960s, Stoppino founded his own architectural and design studio. In 1972, he presented the ‘537’ lamp (Arteluce) and a nest of tables (Kartell) during the famous exhibition ‘Italy: the New Domestic Landscape’ in New-York. As talented designer, he received the prestigious prize Compasso d’Oro in 1979 for his credenza Sheraton. Stoppino deeply marked the Italian design by his innovative approach.

Some information about the company: Kartell was founded by Giulio Castelli in 1949. In the early years Kartell took its first steps to produce the distinctive design that would come to epitomise the 'Made in Italy’ label. In 1988 the company was acquired by Claudio Luti, the son-in-law of Giulio and Anna Castelli who had a background in fashion. The sensibility that Luti had developed under the Versace fashion house, with a love for perfection and tasteful design, heralded a new start for the brand. Luti sought collaborations with designers and architects like Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Antonio Citterio, Ferruccio Laviani, Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola, Mario Bellini, Alberto Meda and Vico Magistretti, who were responsible for those products that soon came to symbolise the brand. The fresh approach to materials dictated the new direction and brought real turning points for Kartell: studying, manipulating and enriching materials resulted in an end product which offered unprecedented characteristics.

Over the years, Kartell has won a series of important international awards, including nine Compassi d'Oro. Founded in 1999, the Kartell Museum, keeper of the brand's history, won the Guggenheim Enterprise & Culture Award for best business museum in 2000. Claudio Luti, president of Kartell, was awarded the prestigious Red Dot: Personality Prize, the recognition that, from 2020, has been awarded to the most authoritative international entrepreneurial figures in the design industry.

CONDITION

In Good Condition - Some minor staining to the leather seating, consistent with age, no rips or tears. Structurally sound, good overall vintage condition. Please refer to photographs.
