DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century rare Imperial Russian Provincial Solid Silver spoon / server, the long handle attached to a round bowl, beautifully chased with scrolling foliage. The handle bears a nielloed inscription in Georgian alphabet.
The spoon is typically Russian provincial, more specifically Georgian. Georgian silver is particularly rare and sought after, especially the wine ladles called "hazarpesche", used at large feasts such as weddings; each drinker had a ladle and ladled from a communal bowl of wine. This particular ladle is very unsual, being spherical and having a lip on top. It could be made this way to not spill wine while dancing, or to warm the drink up on a fire.
The silver is Hallmarked with a Georgian silver mark (a silver standard or a maker's mark, unknown to me). The ladle has been acid tested and shows a 850+ silver standard.
