Antique 19th Century exceptionally rare Imperial Russian Solid Silver-gilt and cloisonne' enamel tea caddy and cover, richly gilt and beautifully enamelled with multicolored scrolling foliage, flowers and geometric pan-Slavic motifs on stippled ground, supported on four claw and ball feet, the cover is surmounted by an enamelled finial.
Each part is Hallmarked Russian silver (88 for 916 standard, a particularly high silver purity for Russian silver), Moscow, Assayer's mark in Cyrillic dated 1883, Maker's mark in Cyrillic for Antique 19th Century exceptional Imperial Russian solid silver cigarette case, rectangular form with rounded corners, both sides decorated with the traditional Russian polychrome cloisonne enamel, particularly intricate design featuring stylized foliage and the inside is richly gilded. Both sides are Hallmarked Russian silver 88 (916 silver purity), Moscow, year 1886, Assayer's mark for Nikolay Korbitsky, Maker's mark for Pavel Ovchinnikov, one of the greatest Russian silversmiths of all time, appointed court supplier to Tsar Alexander III in 1865: the piece also bears the double headed eagle. with the Imperial Warrant. Ovchinnikov is considered one of the best Russian silversmiths operating in the 19th Century, purveyor to Tsar Alexander III, King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, King Christian IX of Denmark and others (for more information please follow this link). The base is also scratched with the serial number.
