The Eagle badge is hallmarked Russian Imperial Gold 56 (585 standard), St-Petersburg, pre-1896, workmaster's mark (IK) Albert Keibel, one of the most important Russian Imperial jewellers specializing in enamelled medals. The breast star hallmarked 84 (875 standard), Keibel, St-Petersburg. The same set was sold in Sotheby's, 12 June 2008, Russian works of Art, Lot 536.

The Order of the White Eagle was originally Polish, founded in 1325 and revived by Augustus the Strong in 1705. After Russian annexation of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw in 1815 it was retained for Polish subjects and its use was greatly extended following the Insurrection of 1831. It was effectively incorporated into the Russian awards system and could be presented for either Civil or Military merit and commonly awarded to non-Christians.
