DESCRIPTION
Antique mid-19th Century exceptionally rare Ottoman Empire solid silver and niello cartridge case (Palaska), of shaped cartooch shape, hinged lids, the top surmounted by a cast decorative finial, the front, back and sides are beautifully niello enamelled with flowers and leaves.
This type of cartridge boxes (called Palaska) are particularly rare. The shape and style are typical of the Balkan and Greek Ottoman empire regions, this particular piece is very fine and most probably of Greek origin, it dates to the 1830-50. The silver is unmarked (as always the case) but acid tested shows a high 900+ silver standard, engraved with initials.
