Antique early 20th-century Indian (Lahore / Poona) solid silver bowl on stand, designed in a traditional shape with a large domed foot, resting on a large ebonised presentation stand. The bowl features intricate and ornate embossing, with a top band with a thick band of floral foliage. Below, the body chased with various hunting scenes, including hunters on elephants and horseback, fighting lions, wild boar and tigers, below bordered decorated with acanthus leaf motifs.

The circular base is adorned with complimentary animal designs. The bowls distinctive design is typical to the region of Poona, located 120 miles south-east of Bombay, Occupied by the British since the 1802, it was the perfect military base, being 2000ft above sea level, making the unbearably hot Indian summers more bearable.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A silver plaque on the base is inscribed: "Presented to Dwight Alweyne Turner by friends and fellow workers in the Lahore Diocese in recognition of valued help and counsel rendered during many years - April 1909."

Not hallmarked, but tested silver (shows a 900+ silver standard), the two best known silversmiths active in Poona were Hitapa Buchana and M.K Godbole who are known to have exhibited there work from the 1900's. Judging by the quality of this bowl it is undoubtedly made by a prominent silversmith.
