DESCRIPTION
Antique late-18th Century Exceptional German 18k gold & enamel snuff box, of oval shape, the lid inset with an oval beautifully hand painted miniature depicting Marie Antoinette (born Maria Antonia Josepha Joanna von Österreich-Lothringen; November 2, 1755 – October 16, 1793) was the queen of France, executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. She is most known for supposedly saying "Let them eat cake", She was reviled by the French public for her lavish spending. Until her death, she supported the monarchy against reforms and against the French Revolution.
The rare miniature is surrounded by a intertwining green boarder inset with white beads, the lids rim set with pearls. The ground enamelled in translucent radiant blue over engine turned ground, sides engraved and enamelled. Hallmarked inside cover and base with maker's mark FJ (possibly for Freres Jordan, active 1790-1820) and French pseudo marks (made in Hanau), the bezel struck with the inventory number 3729 and later French control marks (eagle head).
