ANTIQUE 19thC BLACK FOREST HALL STAND, SWISS-GERMAN, CIRCA 1890

£1,795.00

This particular hall stand dates back to the latter part of the 19th century. It has incredible detail, with carved antler horns, as well as using antlers not just for the structure of the hall stand but for detailed decorative elements throughout. At the bottom, a compartment for walking sticks (or swagger sticks as they would have been referred to at the time), with a drawer above for keys or other trinkets. Above that, a lovely shaped bevelled mirror flanked by protruding horns for coats and hats. It is truly one of the best examples of late 19th/ early 20th century antler furniture.

DESCRIPTION

Antlers were already used in the late 15th century as a source material for clothes hooks, storage racks and chandeliers, the so-called "lusterweibchen". However furniture made by antlers has been invented in the 19th century and can therefore be assigned to the Biedermeier period. They were exclusively made for the European nobility to decorate their hunting castles and various manors. Antique furniture of this kind is very rare and much sought after, with somewhat of a revival over the past decade or so with many magazines showing interiors decorated with such items.
