The centre is finely chased depicting "The Surrender of Breda", after the painting by the greatest Spanish painter Diego Velazquez. DESCRIPTION
Antique 20th Century rare Spanish Solid Silver hanging wall plaque / panel, extremely large size and heavy gauge, of rectangular form with cut corners, decorative border embossed with scrolling leaves in relief, a nude putto on each corner. The centre is finely chased depicting "The Surrender of Breda", after the painting by the greatest Spanish painter Diego Velazquez, painted in 1634-35 and today in the Prado Museum in Madrid (please follow this link). It was one of twelve life-size battle scenes celebrating the victories of Philip IV's armies.
The reverse bears a memorial inscription "To Mr and Mrs Roy Bartholomaw from their friends in Madrid, January 1929".
The scene celebrates one of the major successes of the Spanish arms during the Eight Years' War (for more information about the history please follow the previous link).
The reverse is Hallmarked Spanish silver (916 standard), Madrid, maker's mark clear but unknown to me, year before 1929.

In Good condition - no damage, just general wear.
