DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century French pair of bronze and marble candelabras. These exceptional candelabras are by the renowned metalworker Ferdinand Barbedienne, made from rouge griotte marble and and applied with ormolu bronze. Each candelabrum standing on a carved marble plinth base which is raised on gilt bronze supporting scroll feet, supporting the vase shaped body of the candelabra.

The vase shaped body is cast in a low relief depicting continuous mythical scenes with Greek goddesses, with two grotesque masks hung with laurel garlands above a frieze. The top of the body mounted with five light branches, each crafted from gilt bronze and adorned with scrolling foliate. The bronze is signed ‘F. Barbedienne’ (Ferdinand Barbedienne, 6 August 1810 – 21 March 1892)
