ANTIQUE 18thC FRENCH MARBLE & GILT BRONZE CLOCK, CLAUDE CHARLES FRANÇOIS FILON
Antique 18th Century French mantle clock, crafted from gilt bronze and marble, was made by one of the leading Parisian clockmakers of the late 1700's. It features a small urn atop the clock with an ormolu grape and vine finial, a center-mounted clock between two marble pillars, ornate ormolu flowers and leaves throughout its body. Ornamental plaques resembling vases flank the clock mount. The base is made of contrasting grey and white marble. The clock has a simple white enamel dial with number markers for hours and quarters. The clock hands have a unique comical design with floral decorations that match the body. It's signed "Filon A PARIS."

Claude-Charles-François Filon stands as a prominent figure among Parisian clockmakers during the latter half of the 18th century. Achieving mastery in clockmaking in 1782, he established his workshop on rue de la Monnaie, garnering patronage from influential collectors in Paris. Throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, his clocks were noted in the probate inventories of esteemed collectors such as banker Joseph Duruey, lawyer Nicolas-Philippe de Rebergues, and Louis-Alexandre Berthier, Prince de Wagram, a distinguished Marshal under Napoleon.
