EARLY 20thC PAIR OF CARVED EMU EGGS, AUSTRALIA c.1900
Antique 20th Century extremely rare pair of Australian carved emu eggs, mounted on a nickel stand shaped as ferns and an ebonised wood base. These artifacts would have been primarily aimed at the tourist market as souvenirs for visitors and are prized today among collectors of “Australiana“ memorabilia. The eggs were often carved with native animals, in this case an emu and a kangaroo, exotic in the eyes of the travelers and a wonderful conversation piece for their drawing room back home. The eggs were very finely carved by hand, extremely fragile and an extremely difficult skill to master.
