DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century rare Chinese Solid Silver large box, of rectangular form, decorated in repousse' high relief, on very finely tooled matted ground, depicting various figures in a landscape, including fighting warriors, dignitaries, attendants amongst palaces, pavilions and a military procession along the sides. The box is particularly large, heavy and very well crafted, by one of the most rare and outstanding silversmiths at the time.

The base is hallmarked Chinese silversmith mark (acid tested shows 900+ standard), Maker's mark for Gan Qing He, important silversmith active in Shanghai 1860-1910. Gan Qing He is renowned for its very fine craftsmanship and produced silver pieces for the wealthiest and most prominent Chinese families, for more information please see A.Von Ferscht, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940, 4th edition 2015.
