DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century rare Chinese Solid Silver large decorative box, of rectangular form, decorated in repousse' high relief, on very finely tooled matted ground, depicting various figures in a landscape and amongst palaces. The box is particularly large, heavy and very well crafted, by one of the most rare and outstanding silversmiths at the time.
Hallmarked with Chinese silver marks (tested 900+ standard), Tianjin, Maker Bao Cheng (active 1895-1920). Bao Cheng was known to be one of the oldest of the group of Tianjin merchants known as the “eight great families [ba ja jia]. His silver mark is very rare and there is only one other item known to be cataloged with his mark.
