ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Sun Shing's early work was primarily in the English/American neo-classical "Georgian" style, featuring pseudo-hallmarks. Around 1850, the style gradually shifted to high Chinese, with silver items marked by chop marks and the double Latin letters "SS." The Hong Kong branch opened shortly after the 1842 Treaty of Nanking and the establishment of the British Colony, though Sun Shing advertisements suggest a presence in Hong Kong as early as 1840. Renowned as a master silversmith of the Chinese Export Silver period, Sun Shing, like many of its peers, was a retail silversmith using artisan workshops to produce its designs. It also functioned as a general luxury goods merchant. A notable example of Sun Shing's work in high Chinese style is an 1880 tankard with a detailed dragon handle and intricate Chinese motifs. Dragon tankards, a Chinese Export Silver specialty, were popular in the West as christening mugs and trophy alternatives in Western clubs and institutions, especially in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
