ANTIQUE 19thC VICTORIAN SOLID SILVER-GILT CUP & COVER, LONDON c.1893
Antique 19th-century Victorian solid silver two-handled loving cup and cover is a remarkable piece, richly gilt and exquisitely cast and embossed. It features carousing cherubs, lions, grapevines, insects, crustaceans, and animals, alluding to the young Bacchus, the god of wine, and is executed in splendid Rococo style. The design is a copy of an original by Paul de Lamerie, circa 1742-1743, who is considered the greatest British silversmith of all time. Two examples of this masterpiece can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Both the cup and the cover are fully Hallmarked English Silver (925 standard), London, year 1893 (S), Maker's mark ABAHB (Alfred & Arthur Henry Benson). The rim of the cover engraved Croxteth Cup, Liverpool, 1889. Won by "Castlenock" Five Years, the foot rim engraved J.W. BENSON. 25. OLD BOND ST. W 917.
