DESCRIPTION

Antique early-20th Century rare Edwardian Arts & Crafts Solid SIlver mounted green glass tankard, of tapering cylindrical form, the hinged cover surmounted by a pierced bud finial, higly decorative strap-work and red enamel cabochons, the body applied with ropetwist work girdle set with red gem cabochons and centered by a vacant cartouche and scroll handle.

Cover and handle are Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1901 (f). No maker's mark, nevertheless the piece is probably manufactured by the Guild of Handicrafts. The style closely reminds the contemporary Charles Robert Ashbee designs made for the Guild of Handicrafts of London, the glass is probably manufactured by James Powell & Sons Whitefriars - for similar silver mounted green glass pieces please follow this link, and this link, and this link, please follow this link to a cup designed by C R Ashbee that features a similar coloured enamel and similar gemstone cabochons. The fact that the maker's mark can't be found on the object suggests that a silver part is possibly missing, possibly the stand.
