19th Century Victorian Silver monumental figural candelabrum centrepiece, raised on three scroll and acanthus feet, the shaped triangular base is applied with cast strap-work, supporting two large and finely modelled figures depicting nude putti, one playing a harp and the other holding a scolling foliage, two large and very naturalistic intertwined stems terminating in five branches, beautifully modelled simulating acorn branches, profusely applied with leaves and acorns. Each branch terminates with a similar sconce set with a detachable nozzle. The five candelabrum's branches are centered by a similar openwork basket with cut-glass bowl. Hallmarked English silver (925), London, year 1852 (R), Maker's mark SSWN for Stephen Smith & William Nicholson.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Victorian Solid Silver monumental figural candelabrum centrepiece, raised on three scroll and acanthus feet, the shaped triangular base is applied with cast strap-work, supporting two large and finely modelled figures depicting nude putti, one playing a harp and the other holding a scolling foliage, two large and very naturalistic intertwined stems terminating in five branches, beautifully modelled simulating acorn branches, profusely applied with leaves and acorns. Each branch terminates with a similar sconce set with a detachable nozzle. The five candelabrum's branches are centered by a similar openwork basket with cut-glass bowl.

This is a most impressive and exceptional solid silver figural centrepieces, 72 cm tall.

The base is engraved with a British Colonial memorial inscription: "to Edmund Gabriel Esq. Her Britannic Majesty's acting commissioner of the mixed Court at Loando (Luanda, the capital of Angola and a famous port, editor's note) on the occasion of the Trial of The Bric Lady Sale, of Liverpool in November mdcccxlv. Presented to him by the owners and underwriters of that vessel to mark their sense of the able and judicious manner in which he protected British interests whilst at the same time he maintained the strict integrity of the Judge. Liverpool MDCCCLII". The other side is engraved with a later memorial inscription dated 1937.

The base and the branches are Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1852 (R), Maker's mark SSWN (Stephen Smith & William Nicholson). The hallmarks on the base are partially covered by the strap-work, but are clear and visible.

CONDITION

In Great condition - No damage, just general wear.
