DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century Victorian Solid Silver trophy cup and cover, exceptionally fine and decorative, the baluster body resting on a circular foot, the body embellished with a protruding Neptune's head on each side surrounded by scrolling foliage, the sides are applied with two cast handles depicting large dolphins, the pull-off lid is surmounted by a cast Earl's coronet finial, meaning that the cup was probably commissioned by a member of the British nobility.
Each part (including the crown) is original and Hallmarked English silver (925 Standard), London, year 1869 (o), Maker's mark crowned RG (Garrard & Co). Robert Garrard was crown jeweller since 1735, when his partner Wickes was appointed as goldsmith to the Prince of Wales. During the 19th Century the firm continued with a succession of famous commissions for Royalty and in 1843 Queen Victoria bestowed the honour of Crown Jeweller on the company.
