The tall cup rests on a domed lobed foot, baluster stem flanked by scrolls, the large body also lobed and chased with stylized foliage, pull-off cover featuring the same decoration surmounted by a large crown-shaped finial. Antique 19th Century rare and impressive Victorian Solid Silver cup and cover, very large size and unusual design derived from German standing cup and covers crafted in Nuremberg in the 16th / 17th century. The tall cup rests on a domed lobed foot, baluster stem flanked by scrolls, the large body also lobed and chased with stylized foliage, pull-off cover featuring the same decoration surmounted by a large crown-shaped finial.
The piece is Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1850 (P), Maker's mark crowned "ISH" for John Samuel Hunt, successor of the Paul Storr firm, the most important English Royal silversmiths of all time. The base is further stamped "HUNT & ROSKELL, LATE STORR MORTIMER & HUNT", serial number "4759".
In 1850, when this impressive piece was made, John Samuel Hunt was at the height of his career. As senior partner of Hunt & Roskell he was goldsmith to Queen Victoria and Commissioner of the 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition, for which he supplied no less than three tons of silver. Among all items he provided a suite of silver-gilt made for Princess Vassili Kobuchev of Russia, also made in 1849-50 and crafted in the style of 17th century Nuremberg pieces.
