Antique 19th Century pair of Victorian solid silver monumental ewers, exceptionally heavy and decorative, each parcel-gilt baluster body is chased and cast with the marriage of Poseidon and Amphitrite surrounded by tritons and sea horses, cast figural handle depicting a winged figure emerging from a gilt mask and connected to a gilt dolphin.
The Renaissance inspired design is typical of Pierre-Emile Jeannest (1813-57), an important French designer and artist working for Elkington & Co and Minton & Co, specializing in Renaissance revival and eclectic style.
Both Hallmarked English Silver (925 Standard), Birmingham, year 1865 (Q), Maker's mark E&Co (Elkington & Co, one of the most preeminent Victorian silver manufacturer).
