DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Georgian exceptionally rare solid silver hot water samovar, inverted pear shaped on a shaped square base, cast scroll feet, body profusely chased in relief with flowers, scrolls and acanthus leaves, applied with large twin leaf caped c-shaped handles, a hot water spout with a cast hinged scroll handle and the large fruit finial on lid. The front and back of the samovar bears a large cartooche with an acorn boarder and centred by an impressive crest of the Edmonstone Family with the moto 'virtus auget honorem' (Virtue increases honour).

From the proud Boernician clans of the Scottish-English border region comes the name Edmonstone. It is derived from the personal name Edmond. Edmonstone is a patronymic surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Many patronyms were formed by a son using his father's personal name as a surname. Others were taken from the names of important religious and secular figures. Members of the Edmonstone family settled in Scotland, just following the Norman Conquest of England, in 1066.

Hallmarked English Silver (925 standard), London, year 1821 (f), Maker JA (Joseph Angell I, In partnership with his brother, John Angell I, 1831-1840 and with his son, Joseph Angell II, 1840-1849.)
