DESCRIPTION

Antique early-19th Century Georgian Solid Silver cup and cover, richly gilded, very large, heavy and decorative, the campana-form body is applied with acanthus foliage in the lower part and the rim is applied with a frieze of scrolling foliage and flowers, applied cast handles modelled like grapevine branches, the cover featuring a scrolling grapevine band surmounted by a pine cone finial, vacant oval cartouches encircled by laurel branches.

Such large vases were the most fashionable interior design accessory of the late 18th / early 19th Century; the silver cup and cover in form of vase was at the top end of the market for such items. Due to the large size it can be used as a wine or champagne cooler.

Both parts are fully Hallmarked English silver (925 Standard), London, year 1817 (b), Maker's mark W.B (William Bateman I, important silversmith, grandson of the famous female silversmith Hester Bateman).

CONDITION

In Great Condition - no damage, just general wear.
