19th Century Austrian silver-gilt, enamel & gem set pair of ewers, standing on a triangular base below three fauns, each with an upraised arm and an enameled lobster at the feet, supporting the body with silver panels engraved with foliage and filled with multi-coloured enamels, surrounded by richly gilt strapwork, side mounted with a monster-head spout and handle, the neck with profile medallions within wreaths.

DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century Austrian exceptional solid silver-gilt, enamel & gem set pair of ewers, standing on a triangular base below three fauns, each with an upraised arm and an enameled lobster at the feet, supporting the body with silver panels engraved with foliage and filled with multi-coloured enamels, surrounded by richly gilt strapwork, side mounted with a monster-head spout and handle, the neck with profile medallions within wreaths.
Apparently unmarked, silver tested (900+ silver standard), Attributed to Hermann Ratzersdorfer, Vienna. Hermann Ratzersdorfer (1815-91), active from 1843 and specializing in the production of the finest Rococo and Renaissance revival artworks. Ratzersdorfer won medals at the London Exhibition (1851) and Paris Exhibition (1855), and for the 1873 Vienna Exhibition he was awarded a diploma of honour for his vast array of items, described by one French critic mentioning "rock crystal cups and goblets (...) with very fine enamelled paintings imitating the golden age of German Renaissance".
