19th Century Victorian silver four piece tea service, consisting of coffee pot, teapot, sugar bowl, cream jug, each lobed body resting on four scroll feet, profusely embossed in the Chinoiserie, Orientalist and Tenniers style, ingeniously decorated with themes relating to the content of each piece, the coffee pot decorated with an Arabic orientalist scene, the teapot with a chinoiserie scene, the sugar bowl with an American sugar plantation, the milk jug with a Tenniers inspired agricultural scene and hinged lid mounted with cast seated nomad finials.

DESCRIPTION
Antique mid-19th Century exceptionally rare Victorian solid silver four piece tea service, consisting of coffee pot, teapot, sugar bowl, cream jug, each lobed body resting on four scroll feet, profusely embossed in the Chinoiserie, Orientalist and Tenniers style, ingeniously decorated with themes relating to the content of each piece, the coffee pot decorated with an Arabic orientalist scene, the teapot with a chinoiserie scene, the sugar bowl with an American sugar plantation, the milk jug with a Tenniers inspired agricultural scene and hinged lid mounted with cast seated nomad finials. Chinoiserie and Orientalist design became popular in the mid-18th century with the Huguenot silversmiths, such as Paul de Lamerie who was greatly inspired by the exotic far east designs and this fashion followed until the late19th Century.
The reverse engraved with the Thompson family crest and the motto 'nosce te ipsum'. The Ancient Greek aphorism "know thyself" is the first of three Delphic maxims inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi according to the Greek writer Pausanias. The two maxims that follow "know thyself" were "nothing to excess" and "certainty brings insanity". In Latin the phrase, "know thyself", is given as nosce te ipsum.
