DESCRIPTION
Stunning 20th Century Italian solid silver gilt Benvenuto Cellini salt cellar, this richly gilt and enamelled table sculpture is an identical copy of the salt cellar Benvenuto Cellini completed in 1543 for Francis I of France. The sculpture is depicting a male figure representing the sea (Poseidon) and the female figure representing the earth (Gaia). The small vessel is meant to hold salt is placed next to the male figure, a temple shaped box for pepper is placed next to the female figure. The original salt is now displayed at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The piece is hallmarked Italian silver 800 (800+ standard), Milan, Maker 245 MI (Guido Fiorentini, renowned Italian silversmith), the piece dates to the 1960's.
