DESCRIPTION

Antique 20th Century exceptionally rare Danish Solid Silver Novelty desk inkstand, massive size, realistically modelled as a frozen pond with a icy shore, mounted with a large polar bear walking on top of it. The frozen ice mound with a hidden hinged lid, opening to reveal the inkwell, set with a glass well.

Both the base and the lid are Hallmarked Danish silver (925 standard), city mark for Copenhagen, year 1918, Assayer's mark "E.F", Maker's mark crowned "MICHELSEN", a very important silver manufacturer and Royal jeweller. Anton Michelsen was the founder of one of the most important jeweller families in Denmark. He established his own company in 1841 and almost immediately he received the first commissions from the Royal family. He was officially made "Court Goldsmith and Maker of Orders" in 1848.

In the Royal Danish Collection there is a most unusual novelty cigarette box modelled as a silver railway carriage, it was given to Crown Prince Frederick IX on his marriage to Princess Ingrid in 1935 (follow this link), proving that novelty silver pieces by the Royal Jeweller Michelsen were very rare and popular in the 20th Century.
