ANTIQUE 19thC ITALIAN MICROMOSAIC TABLE TOP, ST PETER SQUARE, ROME c.1880

19th Century Italian Grand Tour Micromosaic table top centered by a roundel showing St. Peter's Square within a lapiz lazuli border, and surrounded by six ovals depicting the Temple of Vesta, St. Angel Castle and the Tiber bridge, the Pantheon, the Arch of Titus, the Arch of Janus Quadrifrons and the Colosseum within a malachite border, extremely fine quality, set on a black slate. Such micro mosaic plaques were very popular in the late 19th century, when European aristocracy used to visit Italy during the so called "Grand Tour". The plaque is typically Roman, dating to 1870-90, possibly from the studio of the renowned craftsman Cesare Torreggiani.
