Charles Horner began his career in the mid - 1850s and later purchased a retail watchmaking and jewellery business in Halifax. He died in 1896 leaving six sons of whom two James Dobson and Charles Henry (Harry) became managing partners. 'Dorcas' thimbles were made in great numbers as well as a large variety of gold and silver jewellery of variable quality, some of it enamelled or gem-set.
