Dunhill

Alfred Dunhill Limited (commonly known as Dunhill) is a British luxury brand specialising in high-end men’s goods. It offers designer and bespoke menswear, fine leather goods, accessories such as lighters, pens, and watches, as well as fragrances. The company was founded in 1893 by Alfred Dunhill in London, where it remains headquartered today.

Alfred Dunhill inherited his father’s saddlery business, which had a workshop in London. Recognising the growing popularity of automobiles, he pivoted the business towards luxury motoring accessories, launching the "Dunhill’s Motorities" collection. This pioneering range included car horns, headlights, leather coats, driving goggles, picnic sets, and timepieces tailored for motorists.

By the early 20th century, Dunhill had firmly established itself in London’s luxury market. In 1907, Alfred Dunhill opened his first tobacconist and pipe shop on Duke Street, St James’s, an address still associated with the brand today. The company quickly became known for its superior craftsmanship and innovative approach, catering to aristocrats, businessmen, and discerning gentlemen worldwide.

Over the decades, Dunhill expanded beyond motoring accessories and tobacco products, developing a reputation for refined British craftsmanship. Its product line grew to include fine leather goods, timepieces, and writing instruments, each embodying a commitment to elegance and quality.

The brand introduced its first iconic lighter in the 1920s, a product that would become a hallmark of Dunhill’s identity. The Rollagas lighter, launched in the 1950s, remains one of the most recognisable luxury lighters ever made. Dunhill lighters have featured in several James Bond films, beginning with Dr. No (1962), reinforcing the brand’s association with sophistication and adventure.

Dunhill also gained a strong presence in the luxury watch industry, with timepieces blending British design with Swiss horological expertise. Its pens and leather goods, particularly attaché cases and briefcases, became status symbols for professionals and collectors alike.

Dunhill operates exclusive Dunhill Houses, luxury lifestyle destinations designed to offer more than just retail experiences. These flagship locations provide tailored services such as bespoke tailoring, barbering, spa treatments, wine and cigar lounges, private bars, and even cinemas. Currently, Dunhill Maisons can be found in London, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, each designed to immerse visitors in the brand’s heritage.

Today, Dunhill is part of Richemont SA, the Swiss luxury conglomerate that also owns Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Panerai, Montblanc, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and other prestigious brands. Under Richemont’s stewardship, Dunhill has maintained its status as a leader in men’s luxury while continuing to innovate and honour its legacy.

Rare and vintage Dunhill pieces, particularly early lighters, watches, and bespoke leather goods, are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide. The brand’s historical significance and dedication to craftsmanship make its antique and limited-edition items especially valuable.

With a legacy spanning over 130 years, Dunhill remains synonymous with British luxury, offering products and experiences that reflect a commitment to quality, heritage, and understated refinement.
