DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century rare and unusual German Solid Silver gilt mounted ostrich egg cup and cover, the domed spreading circular foot chased with fruits and foliage, the baluster stem also chased and flanked by scrolls, supporting the ostrich egg bowl with a pierced cover mounted with a Thaler coin, of the Imperial City of Augsburg, representing Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, dated 1765.
The top half of the ostrich egg is mounted with richly gilt silver in the same design and surmounted by a figural finial depicting a mythological figure, the silver mounts and foot is further set with blue cabochons.
This ostrich cup is inspired by the Renaissance 16th century cup and covers, such as the one in the British Museum or the highly important Elizabeth I "Whitfield Cupa" ostrich-egg cup and cover, recently sold for £577,250 (please follow this link).
The base is Hallmarked German Silver (800 standard), Maker's mark partially rubbed (possibly Schleissner & Sohne?), retailer's mark "EM"
